호지의 터는 본래 그늘이 없는 뜨겁고 건조한 땅이지만, 지대가 낮아 일시적으로는 습하기도 해 버드나무와 사초류 그리고 여러 잡풀들이 자생하던 곳이었어요. 지금은 건물과 나무들로 음지가 생기고, 땅의 높낮이로 빗물이 고이는 웅덩이가 만들어졌죠. 본래의 터가 가진 특성과 변화된 환경에 어우러지는 다양한 식재를 선별하여 심었어요. 이제 이곳에 뿌리 내린 식물들은 곤충과 새, 야생 생물들과 함께 먹이사슬의 연결고리 안에서 살아갈 거예요. The site of the pond was originally a hot, dry land with no shade, but due to the low altitude, it was temporarily wet, so willow trees, sedges, and various other weeds grew naturally. Now, buildings and trees create shade, and puddles where rainwater collects have been created depending on the height of the ground. We selected and planted a variety of plantings that blend in with the characteristics of the original site and the changed environment. Now, the plants that have taken root here will live in the food chain along with insects, birds, and wild creatures.
호지정원은 스타일이나 조형성에 초점을 두지 않고, '생물과 환경' 그 속의 '연결과 다양성'에 기반을 둔 정원입니다. 생물의 다양성은 정원 (자연)의 지속 가능함을 만들어 냅니다. 이곳의 식물들은 주변 식물들과 경쟁, 때로는 공생하며 그들만의 방식으로 살아갈 것입니다. 새순이 돋아 성장하고 꽃이 피며 열매를 맺고 잎이 갈변하여 떨어지기까지의 모습은 어쩌면 우리의 삶과 닮아 있기도 해요. Hoji Garden is a garden that does not focus on style or formativeness, but is based on ‘connection and diversity’ within ‘living things and the environment’. Biodiversity makes the garden (nature) sustainable. Plants here live in their own way, competing with and sometimes coexisting with surrounding plants. The way a new shoot sprouts and grows, flowers bloom, bear fruit, and leaves turn brown and fall off may resemble our lives.
지금 바라보는 이 정원의 모습도 이들이 살아가는 생애 한 순간 순간들입니다. 우리가 보는 이 찰나의 모습이 아름답든 추하든, 이들도 그저 삶과 죽음 사이의 과정일 거에요. 우리 한사람 한사람의 인생처럼요. 호지는 아름답게 디자인된 정원보다는 식물이 살아갈 터전을 만들고 싶었습니다. 그 안에 작게 심어둔 자연을 대하는 시선과 태도, '아름다움'에 대한 질문을 함께 발견하길 바랍니다. The view of this garden now is also a moment in their lives. Whether the moment we see is beautiful or ugly, it is simply a process between life and death. Just like the lives of each of us. Rather than a beautifully designed garden, Hodge wanted to create a home for plants. I hope that you will discover together the perspectives and attitudes toward nature and the questions about ‘beauty’ planted within it.
